KFI Radio Advertising: The Story

KFI-AM is a popular radio station in Los Angeles, CA. It broadcasts at 640 AM. It can be heard throughout most of the western United States, including Arizona and Nevada. It broadcasts news and other talk during the day. It's also a top-40 music station. KFI provides shows for national syndication, aside from local programming.

KFI, the flagship station for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1960s was KFI. It aired every Dodgers game throughout the 1970s. KFI was an important source of news about war in the Los Angeles-area during World War II. It also carried NBC's weekend broadcast service.

KFI began playing adult-oriented top 40 music in late 1970s. Popular disk jockeys were interspersed by aggressive local sports coverage. Dave Diamond was evening host. Bob Shannon survived the change, and later worked as a film acting coach in Los Angeles.

The Swingin' years was a nationally syndicated program that ran for over 25 years. Chuck Cecil hosted it from 1956 until the early 1970s. It aired on KFI before it was moved to KKJZ in Long Beach.

During the late 1970s, KFI went from a top forty format to a news and talk station. Scott Ellsworth's program, Scott's Place, featured jazz music. Other hosts included Ted Rall and Charlie Fox.

Lohman & Barkley were a morning duo. They also did live-call-in shows. Casey Bartholomew worked as a board operator and wrote many of the most popular "updates." Tim Kelly contributed to the Bill Handel Program.


KFI is also a pioneer in the Emergency Alert System Western U.S., providing play-byplay broadcasts and support to other stations across the Southwest. Its transmitter station is located in La Mirada (California). It has switched off HD signal since August 12, 2015.

KFI also has an iHeartRadio streaming platform. There are two local talk shows and one national syndicated show. All of the hosts hail from Southern California. Some of the radio's most famous personalities have appeared on the station.

KFI's lineup is constantly changing over the last decade. Several of the old hosts have left the station. Some have returned. Neil Saavedra now serves as the marketing director. Mike Nolan has returned to the air as a ground traffic reporter.
