WSB Radio Advertisers List

display advertising

WSB (750 kHz), one of Atlanta's AM radio stations, is a commercial station. It is the flagship station for the Cox Media Group, which is also responsible for the local NBC and ABC television networks. Since the 1940s WSB had been the home of both the "Atlanta Braves", a local Major League Baseball team, as also the University of Georgia Bulldogs Radio Network. WSB began as a separate entity in the early years with simple listening and popular music formats. It eventually evolved into a full-service broadcaster.

In the 1920s, the Department of Commerce established a second entertainment channel to local broadcasters. The "Red Network", a NBC radio channel, offered a variety in radio programming, including dramas, news, sports, and news. Although WSB was not a part of this network, the station was the aforementioned NBC's first official television affiliate.

WSB's list of notable feats is long, but it's hard to deny the aforementioned NBC's red network was one of the most innovative and successful in the country. One of the most prominent and earliest examples is the WSB trademark three-tone NBC chimes. This was the first time such chimes had been heard in Atlanta. It may also have had the biggest influence on the popularity and growth of NBC's flagship television station. Notable also is the fact that WSB had the first "statewide TV news" program. This is something that no other local station has done. Wright Bryan was the first war correspondent on D-Day to report on it. Russ Spooner is the first WSB Morning Show host.

WSB's list gimmicks include a wacky nickname and a slew TV-related accolades. WSB, for instance, has the distinction of being the second oldest television station south-west of Washington, D.C., along with the second-oldest signer on the air in Atlanta. WSB-TV aired first on Channel 8 September 1948. When Cox purchased WSB in 1980 it moved to Channel 2 before switching networks with WXIA TV. WSB's other major coup was the acquisition of the Atlanta Hawks, who joined the fray in 1995.
